5/11/2023 0 Comments A Nurse's Story by Tilda Shalof![]() Shalof describes a colleague who is managing a “crashing” patient: “I looked at her. It all took its toll on the staff.Īnd yet, on good days, they thrived on what they did. ![]() A woman rescued – too late – from a burning house. A boy struck down by a cerebral aneurysm in the middle of a little-league hockey game. A number of patients were admitted when it was too late even for heroic measures. Doctors and nurses alike wondered if what they did for terminally-ill patients was not, in some cases, too extreme. With their skill, dedication, and the resources of modern science, they sometimes were almost too successful. Many patients, quite simply, were dying, and the staff strove mightily to prolong their lives. Working in the ICU was both emotionally grueling and physically exhausting. The others accused her of being “sooo sensitive.” Justine, the union rep, wore t-shirts emblazoned with defiant slogans, like “Nurses Care But It’s Not in the Budget.” Shalof was the one who had been to university. ![]() Frances, from Newfoundland, was famous for her improvised recipes. Laura set the tone with her quick remarks. The team of nurses that Tilda Shalof found herself working with in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a big-city hospital was known as “Laura’s Line.” They were a bit wild: smart, funny, disrespectful of authority, but also caring and incredibly committed to their jobs. ![]()

Pratt![]() ![]() ![]() It is there she first confronts two creatures, first described in ancient Hebrew and Christian texts as the Nephilim or “fallen sons of God,” who vye to posess her body and soul and keep her from true love with her mystery man. She tracks him through the dark side of Old Algiers with the aid of one of its most famous Voodoo priestesses to an abandoned sanitarium in the heart of the swamplands surrounding New Orleans. When Eve awakes naked, sexually ravaged and alone in the garden of one of New Orleans’ most historic homes, she begins her search to uncover who this mystery man really is. ![]() Eve Parsons, a talented writer for a successful magazine that covers New Orleans society events, is leading an exciting life filled with friends, family and work–until it is turned upside down by a fateful encounter with a stunningly handsome mystery man who ignites her most sensual fantasies. ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments Eileen a novel by ottessa moshfegh![]() Maybe it’s because I can’t help but compare this unfavourably to Ottessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest of Relaxation. Alas, in this instance, a re-read failed to make me a fan of Eileen. I picked Eileen up again hoping that, as was the case with other novels that I originally ‘didn’t really get’ (an example would be hangsaman, a book i consider to be an all-time fave now), a re-read would improve my opinion of it. The first I read it was back in 2018 I wasn’t particularly impressed by it, and in my original review I wrote that I found many elements within its story ‘excessive’ and that overall I found the narrative ‘flat’. These are some of the words that come to mind when I think of Eileen. Vile, vulgar, grotesque, sensationalistic, morbid, dismal, gratuitous, self-indulgent. There’s no better way to say it: I was not myself back then. ![]() ![]() ![]() “I was like Joan of Arc, or Hamlet, but born into the wrong life-the life of a nobody, a waif, invisible. Compared to My Year of Rest and Relaxation, Eileen just ain’t it. ![]() ![]() Reinhart and Jarrett getting into a cat fight and slapping each other’s hands, but Mr. It didn’t make sense that they laughed, even though it probably looked funny, Mr. I mean, Jarrett stops him from getting away and then tries to take the box from him and the other characters laugh. I thought that the showdown, if you can call it that, with Mr. I thought that the writing got a little bit sloppy at the end. Roland West Loner didn’t feel like it needs a sequel, but there were some unanswered questions that I will talk about under spoiler warnings. I really enjoyed watching the character growth of these two, as well as the character growth that Caitlyn had. Peter is not very nice to his little brother Toby who has autism, or to his friend Caitlyn, while Roland is a very private person who has trouble trusting others. Peter has just received an inheritance from his grandfather, and Roland feels very drawn to it. ![]() ![]() Roland is trying to escape his maniac brother who will do pretty much anything to go on a trip to Italy that their father planned for Roland. ![]() Roland West Loner is about two fourteen-year-old boys, Roland and Peter. ![]() It introduced me to Saint Conrad of Parzham, and I love it when books introduce me to saints I didn’t know before. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She sits outdoors near a bubbling pool at her Arlington home. ![]() I recently purchased from a large lot of real photo postcards, an autographed postcard of Dorothy Canfield Fisher. Eleanor Roosevelt named her one of the ten most influential women in the United States. In addition to bringing the Montessori method of child-rearing to the U.S., she presided over the country’s first adult education program and shaped literary tastes by serving as a member of the Book of the Month Club selection committee from 1925 – 1951. She strongly supported women’s rights, racial equality, and lifelong education. 9, 1958, was an educational reformer, social activist, and best-selling American author in the early 20th century. The following is an excerpt from her Wikipedia page:ĭorothy Canfield Fisher, Feb. This week, I write about Dorothy Canfield Fisher of Arlington, Vermont. This is a challenge handled well by Kel McDonald and Tyler Crook in their Eisner-nominated comiXology Originals series, “The Stone King.” But to create a new world with unique traits is a real challenge, one made even more so in comics, where you not only need to have the concept of the world, but strong visuals as well. It’s easy to lazily model your work after Tolkien or Howard with superficial changes. When writing a new fantasy story, no matter the medium, worldbuilding is key.
