5/13/2023 0 Comments Rewilding sussex book![]() Knepp, too, was among the first great stretches of British countryside to rewild - and it’s by far the most famous rewilding project. It helps, too, that Knepp is in the prosperous southeast of England, with plenty of nearby, well-off holidaymakers to take wildlife safaris on the estate. The new obsession with rewilding is part of the misguided Manichean view that nature is beautiful and anything done by man is ugly There is plenty of human intervention needed to keep the balance of nature going in a supposedly wild estate. There are even White Storks nesting in the trees.īut, as the Burrells, who own Knepp, openly say, those White Storks were introduced to the estate by their intervention. Nightingales have returned, accompanied by clouds of Purple Emperor butterflies. I’ve been to Knepp and it is indeed glorious. Eustice referred warmly to the poster boy of rewilding, the Knepp estate in West Sussex. But it’s a little more complicated than that. It sounds like a wonderful idea - a return to a glorious, prelapsarian wilderness. ![]() ![]() ![]() In place of the old EU subsidies, farmers will be rewarded by the government for how much they care for the environment. The government has gone wild. Under new plans, just announced by Environment Secretary George Eustice, farmers and landowners in England could be paid to turn large areas of land into nature reserves and restore floodplains. ![]()

Harrer’s book virtually introduced the Dalai Lama to Westerners and, in a tale stranger than fiction, revealed the culture and people of the remote kingdom. Since its publication in 1953, Harrer’s story has unwittingly contributed to the myth of Tibet as an exotic and inaccessible Shangri-la. There he becomes friend and teacher to the young Dalai Lama. In his native Alps, the renowned mountaineer completed his dramatic story: trapped by the outbreak of war while mountaineering in India, Harrer escapes a British prisoner-of-war camp, and survives a two-year flight through the Himalayas to Lhasa. A newly independent India, fearing the Red Army now at its border, soon ordered Harrer home to Austria and a war-devastated Europe. In the summer of 1951, Heinrich Harrer began writing his classic Seven Years in Tibet in a hotel room in Kalimpong, India, only months after fleeing the Chinese invasion of Tibet. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Blair linne finding my father![]() ![]() She weaves her personal story with thoughtfu. ![]() ![]() Be encouraged that no matter what your story is, the gospel promises not just forgiveness but also a place in God’s family, experienced in a local church, where you can enjoy the fullness of his fatherly joy, care, wisdom, provision, protection, and security. For those who have read the other novels in The Otherworld Series, you can step right back into this world where you know supernatural creatures exist and you can just go along for the ride as Chloe discovers that the world around her is not as "normal" as she thinks.Ĭhloe is a great character to read. Armstrong recaptured her writing style, but for a much younger audience. ![]() I absolutely love Armstrong's books and this one's no different. The teenagers in this book, live in the same universe as the characters in The Otherworld Series, but we get a younger perspective of the already familiar world. ![]() ![]() The Summoning is Kelley Armstrong's (author of The Otherworld Series) debut young adult series book. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments News of the world jiles![]() ![]() The Texas “Newspaper Frontier” as it appeared in 1880 ![]() ![]() John Pfak, of the wonderful eponymous online bookstore specializing in unusual, rare and unique material in the sciences and the history of science, demonstrated this from a map he found, shown below, in an 1882 book entitled History and Present Condition of the Newspaper and Periodical Press of the United States: Oddly, there was something of a line at the 100th meridian between the Texas with newspapers and the Texas without newspapers. In 1870, the population of Texas was 818,579 (ten years later, it would almost double, approaching 1.5 million people). She also employs a distinctive style of showing dialogue without any distinguishing punctuation, which makes it more a part of the narrative flow. She does a great deal of research, and then dramatizes conflicts among people in the era about which she is reporting with an unstinting yet lyrical eye. Her books are unlike any others I have read. Her novels often explore historical periods but with a poetic bent. When I saw Paulette Jiles had a new book I jumped at the chance to read it. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Thud the discworld board game![]() All contained in a cotton travel bag.īoard measures 47 x 47cm. ![]() Also included are rules for Koom Valley Thud, a high speed version of the game. The book explores how other top boxers and athletes dealt with race politics at the time. This is more than the story of Trollmann’s dramatic life. In post-war Germany, his family became activists and fought for the return of his champion title and his dignity. ![]() He went on to serve on the front lines of war, fighting for Germany even as many of his own family were deported to concentration camps. The Nazis, who took a strong interest in boxing, would not accept him as the winner because he was Sinto, or Gypsy. Trollmann, unlike many athletes in the face of racial prejudices at the time, used his visibility in the ring for shocking and aggressive protest, turning fights into politically charged performance art.
